The Dirty Toxic Truth Behind Your Makeup

Why is vegan makeup so important? Let me ask you a question? Do you like smearing chemicals on your pretty eyes? Didn't think so, neither do I.

Toxins

Did you know? All the toxins in our make up, pretty much there are no guides lines. They can use whatever they want. Slip in what ever nasty toxins they want. A company can have 40 toxic ingredients and have one botanical ingredient. They can call it a "botanical ingredient" and sell it! There is very few guidelines by the FDA.  The law does not require cosmetic products to have all ingredients listed other than some color additives

Not So Fun Fact
  1. 82,000 toxic cosmetic ingredients
  2.  Some chemicals are carcinogens, pesticides, reproductive toxins and hormone disruptors
  3. Plasticizers used, that's chemicals that keep concrete soft so it can be poured
  4. Degreasers, which are used in car garage companies to clean auto parts
  5.  Surfactants, which help reduce surface tension in dyes

🙆

We use these on a daily basis and put this harmful chemicals on our skin and our precious babies.

Have you heard of the term, Trade Secret?

It's a Cancer causing chemical “special ingredient”. These Companies are requesting to call their secret chemical of choice this for their brand.

Many popular brands have BHA, BHT, DEA, petroleum, for formaldehyde, and sodium laureth sulfate.  Some are known or suspected carcinogens, meaning they can cause cancer; other's are toxins that interfere with the brain, reproductive and endocrine functions.

All Make up and skin care have some levels of  toxins. It’s understanding which brands are the best choice for your skin and body.

What I'm going to say might make you angry

Animal Testing

It's cruel, unnecessary and in accurate. The federal law lies to us.

Not all labels are created equal. The United States federal law allows companies to leave put toxic ingredients. The United States lags behind many other countries when it comes to protecting people and animals from harmful substances. More then 500 products sold in the US contain ingredients that have been banned for use in cosmetics in other countries. These chemicals have been banned in Canada, Japan, and the European union. You might be using those ingredients everyday.

Protection

There is zero protection under animal welfare act. Which is so maddening to me, every life matters. Researchers and scientists at cosmetic companies routinely abuse mice, rats, guinea pigs, rabbits, turtles, as they test their beauty products before going on the market.

According to the Humane Society of the United States, these are common test studies done on our beloved animal's.

  • Skin and eye irritation test, rub chemicals onto the shaved skin or dripped into the eyes of restrained rabbits. These animals never get pain killers.
  •  Repeatedly  force feeding studies, lasting for weeks or months, which animals are made to ingest a substance. Testers can look for signs of general illness or specific health hazards, such as cancer or birth defects
  • Lethal dose tests- in which animals are forced to swallow large amounts of test chemicals to determine if it will cause them to die. This practice has been widely condemned by public, but it still happens today
  • At the end of the test, the animals are killed, normally by asphyxiation, neck breaking, or decapitation. Pain relief is not provided. Horrifying, isn't it?

It's important to know that animal testing is not required by law. The United States food & drug  administration “FDA” nor the United States consumer product safety commission. Neither requires companies to test cosmetic household products on animals. FDA supports alternative testing. It states on their page website

Why company still testing?

Sometimes companies choose to develop or use new untested ingredients in their products. They conduct on animals because they think the results will prove that the ingredients are safe for human use. Other companies test on animals because they want to brag about the unique beneficial properties of specific ingredients and need data to back up their claims.

Animal testing is unreliable and ineffective. They're testing human products on non-human species. According to the Humane Society of the United States, this means that the consumer safety simply isn't guaranteed. The results are variable and difficult to interpret, which means data does not apply to humans. All these animals are killed, maned and tortured for findings that just don't help make beauty products any safer.

How beautiful is that? Sadly companies will still test on animals as long as the demand is there. Which means, you support their brand, you support animal testing.

Alternatives

There is hope! Non-animal  testing can be done by companies that want to provide cruelty free products. Combine human cell-based studies and sophisticated computer models to deliver human relevant results in hours or even days.
